WORD ASSOCIATION IN L1 AND L2 An Exploratory Study of Response Types, Response Times, and Interlingual Mediation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Word association responses in fi rst-language (L1) Spanish and secondlanguage (L2) English were investigated by means of response latencies and types of associative response produced. The primary aims were to establish whether (a) some response types are produced more often or faster than others, (b) participants’ L2 response time profi les mirror those of their L1, and (c) participants’ L2 association responses are mediated by their L1 and modulated by profi ciency. Results indicate that responses are faster when a double association link is produced—that is, when the response is associated by form and meaning ( postman → postbox ) or meaning and collocation ( spider → web ). L2 response time profi les broadly mirror those of the L1, although L2 times are generally slower. A signifi cant priming effect from L1 translation equivalents of cues used in the L2 association task was observed, suggesting L1 mediation in the production of L2 associative responses. Findings are discussed in light of the revised hierarchical model (Kroll & Stewart, 1994). New approaches to modeling and understanding the bilingual lexicon are also suggested.

First Language Activation during Second Language Lexical Processing in a Sentential Context
Lexicalization-patterns, the way words are mapped onto concepts, differ from one language to another. This study investigated the influence of first language (L1) lexicalization patterns on the processing of second language (L2) words in sentential contexts by both less proficient and more proficient Persian learners of English. The focus was on cases where two different senses of a polys...
متن کاملAcquisition of cleft structures in L1 and L2
The present study aims at exploring the processing difficulty of cleft structures as a type of relative clause for EFL and Persian as first language learners. The impact of head nouns with various functions as well as that of embedding on the processing of Persian and English cleft structures has been investigated in the present study. The participants were 68 Iranian male and female students...
متن کاملDo semantic sentence constraint and L2 proficiency influence language selectivity of lexical access in native language listening?
We investigated whether language nonselective lexical access in bilingual auditory word recognition when listening in the native language (L1) is modulated by (a) the semantic constraint of the sentence and (b) the second language (L2) proficiency level. We report 2 experiments in which Dutch-English bilinguals with different proficiency levels completed an L1 auditory lexical-decision task on ...
متن کاملWritten word recognition by the elementary and advanced level Persian-English bilinguals
According to a basic prediction made by the Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM), at early stages of language acquisition, strong L2-L1 lexical links are formed. RHM predicts that these links weaken with increasing proficiency, although they do not disappear even at higher levels of language development. To test this prediction, two groups of highly proficie...
متن کاملHead start for target language in bilingual listening.
In this study we investigated the availability of non-target language semantic features in bilingual speech processing. We recorded EEG from Dutch-English bilinguals who listened to spoken sentences in their L2 (English) or L1 (Dutch). In Experiments 1 and 3 the sentences contained an interlingual homophone. The sentence context was either biased towards the target language meaning of the homop...
